Angry Birds Movie Coming in 2016
When Angry Birds first came out, there were only a few people who could imagine its success today. Addictive as ever, Angry Birds is one mobile game that has transcended all platforms and now finds itself in the center of Hollywood. Rovio Entertainment originally created Angry Birds for Apple iOS devices exclusively in 2009, but since its release, it has become the quintessential smartphone game, being named one of the top games available for any mobile phone, whether it be Apple, Android, Symbian or Windows. The latest development sees Despicable Me producer taking on a new challenge with these feathery good guys and evil pigs, creating a film release for 2016.
Most people know John Cohen from the Universal Pictures hit Despicable Me. He produced the movie and created a loveable classic, but his latest endeavor will see him taking on a 3D CG-animated movie about the famous mobile game Angry Birds. The game has grown exponentially since its initial release, coming out with special editions that partnered with movies like Rio to Star Wars. The Star Wars version, which was released on October 8, 2012, climbed to the top of the U.S. iPhone charts in a record-breaking two and a half hours.
Cohen isn’t the only one excited to work with Angry Birds. Executive producer of Iron Man, David Maisel, will also be signed on to help out on the new animated flick, set to be released in summer of 2016. However, Rovio Entertainment is financing and producing the project. Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment, spoke about the new film release and how the producers plan to create something that Angry Bird fanatics and those who have never played will both love.
“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock,” Hed said in a press release. “With John’s hands-on producer background and David’s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”
The new Angry Birds film is currently in development and there is no official news on who will star as the voices of these feathery fiends. But many hope to see Kaitlin Olson and Gilbert Godfried among the casting choices.
