Published On July 25, 2013 | Gaming

Nothing gets the adrenaline going like a really good car racing game. With so many games out there, it can be hard to figure out which ones to spend your time and money on.

To help you narrow the field (or race track) a bit, here’s our list of the top picks for smartphone and home video game system car racing games.

Realistic Racing

If you want a realistic driving experience with your car racing games, Forza and Gran Turismo are the go-to games. Forza Motorsport 4 is Xbox 360’s answer for genuine car enthusiasts who are more interested in setting fast lap times in real car models than playing racing games like Mario Kart which allow weapons or power-ups to beat out opponents. Forza also offers network racing so you can race with fellow car enthusiasts around the world.

For true car racing game enthusiasts, nothing beats the original realistic racing game, Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo is widely known for beginning the driving simulator craze in car racing games. Available on Playstation, Gran Turismo is on its fifth iteration. This newest version offers all new cars, a course maker, and all the features fans of Gran Turismo have come to love. Like Forza, Gran Turismo 5 also offers online gaming so you can challenge other racing game fanatics.

Smartphone Car Racing Games

If you want to race away from home, there are cool car racing games available for your smartphone or tablet. Real Racing 3 and CSR Racing are two of the leading car racing games available on your smartphone. Real Racing 3 offers the player the use of real car models and real tracks with incredible graphics.

Real Racing 3 allows you to steer your car by moving your phone as if it was a steering wheel. You can race against your friends with the Time Shifted Multiplayer™ feature. CRS Racing is also stocked with real car models including the Nissan GT-R, BMW M3 and the SLR McLaren. You can customize your car with decals, paint, or license plates or upgrade your car with a turbo charger or racing tires.

Late-Model Classics

You can’t talk about the best racing games without mentioning Mario Kart! For many gamers, Mario Kart was their introduction to the racing game genre and it remains a much loved classic. Mario Kart appeared on Nintendo 64 in 1997 and is still available today on Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.

Mario Kart allows you to race as a number of popular characters from the Mario universe like Bowser, Yoshi, Princess Peach and the man himself, Mario. You can gather weapons, like turtle shells and banana peels, to use against your competitors and gain the upper hand. Mario Kart is the perfect racing game for young and old alike as game controls are easy to use and the graphics are fun.

You don’t have to be a car enthusiast and now you can enjoy these racing games either at home or on the road, so let your inner Schumacher out and let the racing begin!
