It’s a new year which means it’s time to countdown the days to all the hottest video games slated for release in 2017. Fans of open world and role playing games will have the pick of the litter this year and can expect a more immersive gaming experience than ever before. So what games should you keep an eye out for? We’ve got you covered. Here are the top 12 most anticipated games coming your way in 2017.
1. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the latest in the long running Resident Evil franchise. Resident Evil 7 takes a new spin on the classic survival horror game by being the first in the franchise to use first person perspective, dropping players into a decrepit mansion in the Louisiana bayou. Resident Evil 7 also promises to be the most lifelike, immersive experience yet with the use of photorealistic rendering and the ability to play using PlayStation VR. And good news, you don’t have to wait any longer for Resident Evil 7 as the game was released on January 24 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
2. For Honor
For Honor lets players battle their way through history as a Samurai, Knight, or Viking. For Honor features the Art of Battle combat system, giving players complete control of their warrior. Look for For Honor on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC on February 14.
3. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role playing game scheduled for release on PlayStation 4 on February 28. Players take on the role of Aloy, a cunning hunter and archer, as she navigates tribal societies, explores a lush post-apocalyptic world, and faces dangers along the way. The open world technology used in Horizon Zero Dawn makes it one to watch for as players can explore a wide range of environments subject to changing weather and night and day.
4. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been a long time coming, making it one of the most anticipated games of 2017. Coming to Wii U and Nintendo Switch on March 3, players will have plenty to look forward to. The latest Legend of Zelda is a true open world game, letting players take the lead in exploring the wilds of Hyrule, while encountering 100 Shrines of Trials along the way.
5. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is an open world, tactical shooter game where players are responsible for dismantling a dangerous drug cartel. Players come up with their own strategies for a unique game play experience. Ghost Recon Wildlands will be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One beginning on March 7.
6. Mass Effect: Andromeda
Mass Effect: Andromeda is the next chapter in the popular action RPG series. Taking place 600 years after the last Mass Effect, in the latest installment players must defend their new home in the Andromeda Galaxy. Mass Effect: Andromeda will be available on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows, beginning March 21.
7. South Park: The Fractured But Whole
South Park: The Fractured But Whole follows our favorite South Park boys as they join forces to combat an evil that has spread over their quiet town. Players can create their own superhero to manipulate time and space and save South Park from the throws of darkness. South Park: The Fractured But Whole will be available March 31 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
8. Persona 5
For those who love RPGs, Persona 5 is a must. Persona 5 is an anime-style game placing players in the exciting world of high school students in Tokyo who lead dual lives as the Phantom Thieves. Already released in Japan, Persona 5 will hit the states on April 4 for PlayStation 4.
Arms is one of the first releases coming to the much anticipated Nintendo Switch. Arms is a new take on the classic boxing game with fighters having boxing gloves on the ends of long spring arms. The bright, bold colors and fun characters in Arms along with the combination of button and motion controls is sure to make Arms one of the funnest games coming out this year. No exact release date has been given for Arms, but it’s scheduled for release sometime in the spring of 2017.
Cuphead wins a spot in our most anticipated list for its totally unique aesthetics and classic platform game play. Cuphead is designed to look like a 1930s cartoon. Designers even used techniques of the era, including hand ink and drawn animation, to truly capture the style of the 1930s. Anyone who laments the passing of classic boss battles and run and gun platform gaming, will love Cuphead. Look for Cuphead on Xbox One, Windows, and Steam sometime in mid-2017.
11. Red Redemption 2
Not much is known about Red Redemption 2, which is one of the reasons it’s so anticipated this year. What we do know is the game is set in the Old West, like the first game, and it promises to provide a vast world for online multiplayer gaming. The release date is still to be determined with an optimistic goal of sometime in the fall of 2017. So far, Red Redemption 2 is slated to be released for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
12. Detroit: Become Human
Detroit: Become Human is a neo-noir thriller in which androids have replaced humans in many jobs in a near-future Detroit. The game includes several playable characters who must explore what has caused a change in the androids, like showing signs of emotion, and why some have strangely disappeared. Detroit: Become Human is set for release on PlayStation 4 this year but not until December 26.
